What is a developmental editor?
Think big picture elements of a story such as structure, pacing, character arcs, worldbuilding continuity, story-logic, etc. I help ensure your story makes sense to someone outside of your brain while maintaining an engaging pace and emotional throughline.
What genres do you work with? How much does it cost? When can you start?
I am open to manuscripts whenever you are! I charge $0.02 per word and specialize in novel-length projects in the Romance and Fantasy subgenres*.
I'm happy with all heat levels and love contemporary, historical, and otherworldly adventures.
*I am not the best editor for: reverse harem/why choose, anything nonconsensual (rape, dub con, etc), inanimate object romance, and erotica. I don't read enough of these subgenres to edit them properly.
How long does a developmental edit take?
This is entirely project dependent. Word count, style, genre, and cleanliness of the draft all have an effect on timeline (as does my own personal life and health... I am human after all!), but I typically give myself about four weeks for a 100k fantasy edit. I might not need all that time (and if I finish early and you've paid, I'll send my notes asap), but this allows room for life to happen and not affect your deadlines. I can do rush jobs for an increased price if you need it done faster.
This story is my baby, and I'm nervous about feedback.
What's it like working with you?
My editing style has been labeled as "direct," but I prefer to think of it as "no nonsense." I'm kind and will celebrate your wins, but I'll tell you what works and what doesn't plainly. I offer a free pre-edit video chat to "meet the editor" to see if we're a good fit, and a free post-edit video chat to discuss my notes, answer your questions, and brainstorm revisions. The benefit of a boutique developmental editor is the flexibility. I’m here for you and your story goals, so I can adapt to your needs as an author.
I've got a story idea but need help getting it out of my head and onto the page.
Can you help with that?
Yes! I also book coach from concept through developmental edits. I love to brainstorm and ask questions until you get that lightbulb moment to push you forward in your writing journey. Pricing for this is project dependent but typically pays by the hour for video chats and by the word for page edits.
If any of these options is of interest, email me and we can discuss your specific needs, pricing, and timeline.
Or if you aren't sure and would like to set up a "Meet the Editor" chat, email me to let me know.
I can't wait to hear more about your story!
